Thesis (D.Min.)--University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, 2008.
This dissertation examines the power of photography to communicate effectively with High Tech individuals as they explore spiritual issues, which in turn will contribute to the revitalization of the church in the twenty-first century. My approach begins with a discussion of the visual way the High Tech Agers learn in contrast to the rational/logical method the Mainline Church has used in its approach to scripture since the Enlightenment era. I review a newer approach to theology known as "Communication Theology that the church should explore in its approach to High Tech people. I discuss the need for the Mainline Church to rediscover the positive influence of Christian images, symbols, and myths in the spiritual growth of individuals. I discuss what cultural photographers know about the various ways pictures influence our lives. I discuss the importance of art and photography to the church in visually expressing its metanarrative. I review the historical factors, which brought about the loss of an earlier appreciation of the visual in spiritual growth and teaching the Christian metanarrative. I outline the church's limited use of photography in missionary work, evangelism, and teaching. I cite personal examples of my experiences with photos that have successfully offered deeper spiritual insights, brought new understandings of Jesus, and enhanced worship and Christian education. I refer to the photograph's unique ability to "write with Light." I discuss the issues of using photos: interpretations, manipulation of images, fear of images, and uniting the rational/logical approach with the visual experience to enhance learning. I conclude with a suggested strategy for the effective implementation for the use of photographs in the church of the twenty-first century.
