This thesis is a comparative study of our primary case, the Enola Gay exhibit and other past exhibits, to provide useful advice to museum directors in recognizing the tools that special interest groups have employed to achieve their goals in hijacking museum exhibits and what the museum community can do to employ those same tools to their benefit and to the benefit of the exhibit. The grounded theory method will be used to analyze the data in this case study. This is the method most appropriate to responding to my thesis due to large amounts of data from primary and secondary sources that are available. This data will allow for an analysis of the management decisions made by the SI, the NASM and special interest groups during the Enola Gay controversy and other hijacked exhibits, the strategies that were employed and the effectiveness of those strategies. The conclusions reached in this research will provide an important tool for all future and current museum administrators in preventing the hijacking of future museum exhibits.
