Thesis (M.S.)--University of Central Missouri, 2008.
This study surveyed fire departments throughout the State of Missouri, to research their ability to provide tornado sheltering inside of their fire stations. The results of this survey indicate that, while there are fire departments within the State of Missouri that maintain tornado shelters, within their stations, fire departments do not adequately provide tornado shelters in their stations. Most of the fire departments who participated in the study indicated that they do not have tornado sheltering capability in their stations. One hundred thirty seven (137) fire departments provided information about sheltering abilities within their fire stations. Eighty percent reported that they do not have any below ground tornado shelters. The State of Missouri is located within a region known for tornado activity, commonly called tornado alley. Tornado shelters are a common means of protection from the hazards associated with tornados in residential construction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration places responsibility on private industry to provide a safe workplace for employees. Most fire departments are divisions of local government, excluding them from the authority of OSHA.
