Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Dallas, 2008.
A variety of internet-based information sources, such as blogs, message boards and spam provide non-verifiable information to a broad set of potential users. Blog participants can freely post their comments and opinions, whereas information provided through more conventional sources such as earnings announcements, analyst forecasts and other press releases is filtered before it is released. Previous research on audit and earnings quality indicates that verifiability affects the use of information by investors. I investigate whether investors rely on non-verifiable firm-specific news conveyed through blogs. To do this, I evaluate evidence of information content and differential investor trading related to firm-specific blog activity in comparison with traditional, verifiable news activity. I find positive associations between abnormal volume and blog activity and between absolute abnormal returns and blog activity, but these relations are not as strong as similar relations for the verifiable news activity that I look at. I also find that the unexpected mean transaction size of trades associated with high blog activity is less than for verifiable news activity, consistent with small traders responding relatively more to blog activity than large traders. I also find a negative association between blog activity and signed abnormal returns, indicating that blogs, on average, convey negative information.
