Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1996.
Friedrich Holderlin's only novel Hyperion has received a variety of readings, including philosophical ones. This dissertation establishes an intertext between Hyperion and the literary essays written by the Dutch philosopher Francois Hemsterhuis (1721-1790). By reading Hyperion alongside Hemsterhuis' major literary essays, a clearer image of each writer's philosophical program emerges. I maintain that Hemsterhuis is a plausible intellectual source for Holderlin's Hyperion and that the philosophical-poetological aspects of Hyperion are informed by Hemsterhuis' Vereinigungsphilosophie (philosophy of union).

The study begins with an overview of the scholarship on Holderlin and a survey of the major trends in the secondary literature that treats Hyperion. In the second chapter, I take a close look at Hemsterhuis' biography, major literary works, and reception in Germany. The third chapter offers synopses of Hemsterhuis' seven major literary essays.

In the fourth chapter, Hyperion's dialectic of self and world is read in light of Hemsterhuis' philosophy of union. I suggest that the eccentric path metaphor in Hyperion owes much to Hemsterhuis' philosophy and that Hyperion's encounter with the world resonates with Hemsterhuisian philosophical ideas. Chapter five compares the structuring techniques, narrative structure, and sets of imagery which the two writers use to reinforce the conceptual level of their philosophical program.
