Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2008.
Sonia Johnson was an avid spokesperson for the Equal Rights Amendment in the late 1970s. Johnson grew up as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or Mormon Church and was a faithful member until her excommunication in December 1979. Johnson helped organize a group called Mormons for ERA and actively fought for the passage of the ERA. She became a cause celebre for the movement when she was excommunicated from the LDS Church. As she moved away from the LDS Church, her theories became increasingly radical. She ran for President of the United States in 1984, and realized working within the current system does not benefit women. She spent the later part of her feminist career speaking out against patriarchy and promoted her solutions to creating a new world. This thesis maps out her feminist evolution from conservative Mormon Housewife to radical, lesbian, separatist, anarchist feminist.
