Perhaps composing is not as much about the creation of masterpieces as it is about listening. Composing is a special way of listening. Through the application of my teaching method, I propose to make this way of listening available to everyone.

This essay comes from my experience teaching music composition to children in grades five through eight in a public school general music class. On one level, I describe how I teach, how I address the purely practical problems of teaching composition to a large group of kids who cannot read music. I describe a method for teaching composition which specifically addresses some of the serious constraints on teaching music in the public school classroom. I show how the application of this method, even in a very short time, gives the student a real way to hear and compose music.

On another other level, and more importantly, this essay addresses why I teach: why I think that the practice of composition should not be reserved for the very few professional composers among us. Early in the essay, I consider my own experience as a composer. I describe the way of hearing that becomes available to a person who has composed a piece of music. Composing makes a person listen with a greater investment, a greater care and concern for a piece of music, but not just because one has an affinity for one's own creation. Rather this difference has everything to do with the real work of listening for the notes and sounds of a composition in the making.
