Thesis (M.S.)--University of Houston-Clear Lake, 2009.
In a laboratory-based study, twenty-seven University students participated in a study examining different computer tasks and their correlation with the modified RULA postural score. Keyboard heavy task, icon heavy task, right click heavy task, dragging heavy task, and game task were applied as the treatments. EMG was utilized as the objective measurement. Four muscle locations were selected including the flexor, the extensor, the deltoid, and the trapezius muscle. There were moderate relationships between RULA score and the flexor, extensor, and deltoid muscles. The results suggested that even though better interaction methods are selected but if at the same time bad posture is maintained, there will still be a risk of MSDs. Predictive models were developed to predict muscle fatigue using the modified RULA score and self-perceived discomfort report as the predictors. The moderate values of the R2 suggested that the models may not be applied as a strong predictor for muscle fatigue across different computer tasks.
