Friendship may be the least voluntary personal relationship. Friendship's activities, our conceptions of the relationship, and our levels of satisfaction with it, all affect one another. This interaction, combined with time management strategies and reactions to life changes, constantly alters friendship's role, introducing a dynamic component to friendship that makes it as difficult to understand as to maintain.

I interviewed 89 residents of a southwestern suburb, 61 in focus groups and 28 in individual face-to-face interviews. Respondents also completed a survey on basic demographic information, the quality and importance of their friendships, and whether they had a close same-sex friend.

My analysis reveals no formal support systems for friendship and no rules for negotiating the terms of the relationship. These lacks complicate long-term management of strong friendships. Expectations established early in the relationship can lead to misinterpretation of disappointment as signaling weakened friendship rather than as reasonable exigencies in the life situation of the friend. Mismatches in family, career, and social obligations challenge friendships in three senses. First, they lessen time to invest in the friendship. Second, doubts of the strength of the relationship develop as friends change. Third, these changes pose logistical problems that complicate relationship maintenance.

Proximity and homogeneity are necessary (although not sufficient) for friendship formation and maintenance. With effort, friends can overcome decreased proximity. Homogeneity is also not static, given changes over the life course. Proximity and homogeneity interact; if friends can keep each other apprised of the changes as they occur, both can adapt.

My data also seems to show that individual life experiences can override stereotypical gender roles in influencing intimacy in friendship. Thus, gendered behavior is more fluid than the literature's characterization of male friendship as instrumental and females as expressive implies.

Friendship, far from a cure for loneliness, offers little potential to solve dilemmas over frustrated attempts at interpersonal connection. Stress on individuality and achievement in today's America militates against harnessing time and energy in pursuit of friendship. Our high paced life style seems to demand we act as if friendship flows freely.
