Hardwoods indigenous to the northeastern U.S, such as sugar maple (our source), are relatively rich in the hemicellulose xylan and represent an immense renewable resource of biopolymers. The chemical interactions between the main wood components i.e., cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin are of fundamental importance for maximizing the extraction of hemicellulose. In this study, a combined bio-delignification and various isolation techniques such as hot water extraction and use of hydrogen bond breaking solvents such as aqueous urea, guanidine and KOH in varying concentrations were employed to isolate polymeric xylan in its native acetylated state. Quantitative analysis of each extract was carried out to determine the percentage of lignin associated with the extracted xylan which was further characterized. To enhance the mechanical properties of xylan as a biodegradable material, solutions of xylan were mixed with solutions of commercially available cellulose esters like cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), hydroxyl propyl cellulose (HPC) and cellulose ethers like O-methyl cellulose (MC) followed by solution casting into solid films. Triethylcitrate (TEC) plasticizer decreased the brittleness of the film. Blends of MC with precipitated xylan demonstrated mechanical properties comparable to that of pure MC while the blends of xylan with HPC (25:75) and xylan with CAB (25:75) had mechanical properties far superior than either of the parent polymers.
