The purpose of this study was to explore the leadership of Calvin Chao during the formative years of China Native Evangelistic Crusade (C. N. E. C.) from 1943 to 1946 through the use of a narrative inquiry to answer the question: In what ways did Chao construct the definitions of his non-Western leadership in the context of his partnership with the West? This narrative inquiry utilized cognitive anthropology, especially based on the work of Ward Goodenough (1981) as the theoretical framework for data collection and analysis.

Six themes were identified relating to the missionary enterprise as a whole, the subgroups including the local national workers and C. N. E. C. headquarters in Seattle, and the one local national worker operating within the larger group, Chao. The themes are: (a) conflicts of interests; (b) wars of words; (c) philosophy of ministry; (d) understandings of culture and society; (e) Chao as a planner and implementer; and (f) personnel management.

Four significant findings that emerged from the themes are ways that Chao constructed his non-Western leadership: (a) Chao held on to a vision that transcended the opposing views held by the local national workers and the expatriate missionaries; (b) Chao cultivated a level of credibility that impacted the lives of the local national workers as well as the expatriate missionaries; (c) Chao developed trust that strengthened the local national workers' beliefs about themselves being the best persons for proselytizing their own people; and (d) Chao upheld service that manifested itself in partnership.
