This study investigated the relationship between the severity of asthma symptoms and levels of depression, anxiety, and locus of control. A total of 150 asthmatic women between the ages of 18 and 55 voluntarily participated in the study and were subsequently classified in equal numbers into mild, moderate, and severe asthma groups. They were assessed by means of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC). In addition, the 'age of onset' of asthma symptoms was investigated as a covariate. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between the three asthma groups in terms of their levels of depression, anxiety, and locus of control. Specifically, significant differences were found to exist between groups on the STAI-State Scale and STAI-Trait Scale, with severe asthmatics tending to score the highest. The significance tests were borderline for the BDI and the MHLC-Doctors Scale. With respect to overall differences between the groups, women with severe asthma were found to have higher levels of depressive symptoms on the BDI than the moderate or mild groups. While the severe asthmatics had the highest levels of state anxiety, they did not score the highest on trait anxiety. Severe asthmatics also had the highest levels of chance and other people locus of control, while moderate asthmatics had the highest levels of internal and doctors locus of control. Levels of depression, anxiety, and locus of control were found to be only relatively accurate predictors of membership in the mild, moderate, and severe asthma groups. The age of onset was not found to be significantly related to levels of depression, anxiety, or locus of control in any of the groups. These findings are consistent with the growing awareness of the impact of psychological factors on asthma and support current directions in the field aimed at greater reliability of assessment measures and more standardized methods of asthma classification.
