This study was undertaken to assess the incidence of anxiety and depression in a Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Population. In addition, evaluation of the relationship of health locus of control orientation, and coping strategies to anxiety and depression was accomplished.

520 $a The design was a pre post procedural descriptive survey of a convenience sample. Subjects were obtained from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Cancer Center and were selected according to age, negative cerebral metastasis or concomitant illness Symptoms of anxiety and depression were noted in 28% and 10.39 of the subjects, respectively. There was no change in anxiety and depression scores over time.
520 $a Of the independent variables measured prior to the transplant procedure, only emotion focus coping was predictive of depression. Post transplant however, all of the variables were predictive of both anxiety and depression to some degree. possible explanations for these findings are discussed along with suggestions for further research.
