Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1999.
In my thesis I argue that the poet Rui Knopfli, born in colonial Mozambique to white Portuguese parents, is a postcolonial Mozambican writer. I also argue that his poetry should be seen as foundational in the context of a modern Mozambican literary tradition written in Portuguese. Born in 1932, Rui Knopfli lived during his childhood and early adolescence in the Mozambican hinterland, in an area which can be considered still today one of the most remote in the country, and of difficult access to Europeans. From the time he entered high school, in the early 1940s, through the independence of Mozambique, in 1975, Rui Knopfli lived in his adopted home town Lourenco Marques (today Maputo), the capital of Mozambique. In Lourenco Marques he published, between 1959 and 1975, five of his nine volumes of poetry. From 1975 through 1997 he lived in London, where he worked as a diplomat for the Portuguese Government. He died in Lisbon in December 1997, four months after his "return" to Portugal, upon retiring from diplomacy. Two main critical approaches of Knopfli's work have emerged in the past 40 years. On one side are those I will call the Europeanists, who claim Knopfli to be a Portuguese writer, and on the other side the Africanists, who accept him with "reservations" into the family of Mozambican literature. To re-direct the debate around Rui Knoplfi's literary citizenship, I argue in my thesis that Rui Knopfli's poetry is the hybrid result of a socio-historical condition which, although colonial socio-politically speaking, was often postcolonial when it came to its literary discourse.
