Experimental and theoretical studies of pump-approach flow distributions at water intakes were carried out. In the experimental study, detailed three-dimensional measurements of the turbulent flow within the bay area of a right-angle single-pump water intake model with and without cross flow were obtained using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Mean velocity measurements in the intake bay showed that there are remarkable differences between the cross-flow and the no-cross-flow cases. For the no-cross-flow case there was no reverse flow and the flow is nearly symmetric with respect to the longitudinal axis of symmetry of the intake, while for the cross-flow case there was a large recirculation region upstream of the suction pipe such that strong streamwise velocities took place at higher depths and near the left sump sidewall while the reverse flow concentrated at lower depths and close to the right sump sidewall.

In the theoretical study three-dimensional laminar and inviscid solutions of the flow in single-pump and two-pump intakes were obtained using the numerical method of Sotiropoulos and Patel (1992) and Constantinescu and Patel (1997) where the equations were discretized on a non-staggered grid in generalized curvilinear coordinates. The results for the inviscid solution in the single-pump intake were compared with the ADV measurements, and good agreement was obtained between the predicted and measured streamwise velocities. The overall flow patterns in the approach flow and in the vicinity of the suction pipe were also well predicted.

Analytical solutions for both the tangential and axial velocities in the suction pipe for a weakly swirling turbulent flow were also obtained. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were linearized in this case using an order-of-magnitude analysis. Comparisons with previous experiments on swirling pipe flows showed good agreements between the predicted and measured velocities, particularly along the first ten diameters of the pipe.
