520 $a The purpose of this research study was to address one research question: What are the attitudes and beliefs of select Northern Arapaho preschool parents regarding cultural maintenance, focusing specifically on Northern Arapaho language revitalization?
520 $a Qualitative methodology was used in this study to develop grounded theory. Data methods used in this study were in-depth interviews and artifacts. Data were collected from 18 participants through 25 interview transcriptions and 28 artifacts. The goal of this study was to ensure the voice of the participants was being heard concerning their feelings and beliefs regarding culture and language. All emergent working hypotheses needed to come from the participants' perspectives. Constant comparison was used to modify or change the working hypotheses about emergent components based on each next participant interview.
520 $a The analytic procedure for this study was coding. From the coding four core components emerged. These four components were American Indian Family, Cultural Identity, Education and Bi-culturalism. The emergent components reveal Northern Arapaho preschool parents' perspectives on the way to achieve cultural maintenance and language revitalization. (1) Family (includes extended family) is profoundly important in passing on values and language, serving as role models and providing support. Family members put the needs of their extended family first in their lives. (2) Cultural Identity is essential for knowing the life way. It includes learning and practicing traditions, passing on values of respect and education and feeling the desire to preserve the language. (3) Education, although filled with tension around learning western ways while maintaining the Northern Arapaho way, is critical to the Northern Arapaho people. Honoring the learning styles that best meet the needs of the American Indian child can provide an approach to their successful education. (4) Bi-culturalism is the route to cultural maintenance and language acquisition. Parents want their children to be able to succeed in both the Northern Arapaho culture and the Western culture. Currently, most role models are straddling the two cultures but the goal is to move easily between the two.
