The purpose of this thesis is to examine student perspectives on cooperative learning in instrumental music. The following research questions were investigated: (1) How do students interact in two types of cooperative learning groups in an instrumental music classroom? (2) How do students describe the work they do in these cooperative settings? (3) What is the perceived result of the cooperative learning experiences?

In this study, a class of 10 high school students worked in two different cooperative groups over a six-week period. Students participated like-instrument sectional rehearsals and heterogeneous chamber music rehearsals. All rehearsals were audio and video taped and then posted for student viewing. Data was collected from student e-mail reflections, student individual and group interviews, audio and video recordings, a teacher-research journal and observations.
