520 $a I offer here an argument for an expansion of the one-semester Art Appreciation class now offered at Delhi College, to a two-semester "Visual Foundations" class that would combine academic study with studio work in equal measure to the degree that it satisfies the general education requirements for the arts, while acknowledging the scope and complexity of the subject and allowing the time required for its study.
520 $a In support of my argument for including a study of the visual aspects of art in the general college curriculum alongside the other liberal arts I will examine trends in art and art education theory in the latter half of twentieth century America. I will also delineate, albeit briefly, the essential nature of the visual arts including aesthetics, art history, art criticism and art production, and the benefits inherent in each.
520 $a I wish to show that in studying the visual aspects of our culture the student is offered essential instruction in that which would otherwise be neglected. The study of art puts emphasis where other disciplines do not. I believe that the benefits are real and able to be assessed.
