This project determines which characteristics are used by voice teachers when identifying the leggiero tenor voice and how voice teachers perceive and describe these characteristics. Two hundred thirteen voice teachers and twenty-five opera professionals wishing to transition from performance careers to university teaching were polled via an on-line survey platform. Thirty-four individuals responded anonymously to the survey. Their responses were used to draw conclusions about which characteristics are used by the respondent group, and how they perceive the leggiero tenor.

Current pedagogical literature that describes the leggiero tenor and deals with voice classification is examined because voice teachers often draw crucial information from the methods and research conducted by these authoritative writers. Older pedagogical references are examined, as well as musicological writings, to establish a basis for the classification of the leggiero tenor, or tenore di grazia as it was formerly known, and the vocal literature associated with the voice and the vocal demands placed upon the leggiero tenor. Issues of vocal timbre, vocal size, vocal weight, passaggio , and physical characteristics are examined, as these are all potentially important aspects referenced in the classification of any voice.

Questions for the on-line survey were formulated from interviews with seven voice teachers and one conductor who were part of a pilot study conducted for a research class at the University of Houston. A summary of their responses and complete transcripts of these interviews are included as part of this project.
