520 $a Medicago truncatula's chromosome 6 is different from the other eight chromosomes, as the other seven chromosomes have distal regions of gene rich euchromatin on each chromosome arm, surrounding the pericentromeric and centromeric regions of condensed, gene poor DNA that makes up the heterochromatin, while chromosome 6 has multiple heterochromatic sites and retroviral elements scattered throughout its lower arm. These retroviral and other repeat elements have in turn led to a significant amount of gene loss, a lower number of information storage and processing genes, and an increase in signal transduction and plant disease and stress resistance genes.
520 $a Among the chromosome 6 stress resistance genes is the NBS-LRR megacluster, that seems to have developed as a result of its proximity to the retroviral element-rich heterochromatin and allowed this gene cluster to expand and diverge quite quickly, with a high birth and death rate. Concurrently, related genes evolved with divergent functions, such as the NBS-LRR genes with expression in different tissue and developmental stages that are not directly related to the plant stress response.
520 $a The 1 Mb region surround the Rpg1 resistance cluster from two cultivars of Glycine max, a wild relative Glycine tomentella, and Phaseolus vulgaris, also were sequenced along with a related Rpg1 cluster that, because the Glycines are ancient polyploids, has been duplicated. It was found that the homologous regions between cultivars are well conserved with only minor differences in resistance gene numbers between them. However, the homeologue's duplication to the pericentromeric region, with close proximity to heterochromatin and a significantly high number of retroviral elements, has lead to numerous changes in the resistance gene content, with a high resistance gene birth and death rate.
520 $a Both the Medicago truncatula chromosome 6 and the Rpg1 cluster studies reveal that the inherent properties of heterochromatin leads to changes in the nearby genomic content, that likely gives the organism a selective advantage, thereby adding more support to the hypothesis that heterochromatic regions play a key role in genomic evolution.
