Since these tensions have long been presumed absent from fifteenth-century writing in England, their presence in these texts suggests that recognizably social-contractual reasoning has persisted for longer than scholars may have previously believed.

Thomas Malory's fifteenth-century Morte Darthur demonstrates a sophisticated grasp of the social-contract ideal of government. The Round Table exemplifies social-contractual organization and the individualist values that have long accompanied contractual political theories. Accordingly, the tensions inherent in that ideal---tensions that persist today in the social-contract theories of modern political scientists---underlie much of the Morte's thematic complexity. Although the Knights of the Round Table admire and value the new individualist system, they have difficulty with the transition from a lineally organized society to the individualism of the Round Table. The ultimate fragmentation of the Arthurian community is directly attributable to this difficulty.

Malory may have had some contact with social-contractual reasoning, which was not entirely absent from fifteenth-century thought. At approximately the same time that Malory was composing the Morte, John Fortescue was writing On the Governance of England and De Laudibus Legum Anglie, two works of political theory that set out a theory of social contracting. The tensions that drive the Morte ---in particular the challenges posed by contractualist individualism---are also present in Fortescue's description of the social-contract polity.
