Diplodia pinea and D. scrobiculata are fungal pathogens of many conifer species and have a worldwide distribution. In Wisconsin, D. pinea and D. scrobiculata cause disease to the native red (Pinus resinosa) and jack (P. banksiana) pines and abundantly sporulate on necrotic host tissues. Studies were conducted to quantify inoculum produced in or on shoots and cones of jack and red pines using a water extraction and filtration technique. This technique was used to determine incidence and abundance of D. pinea conidia on excised red pine shoots resulting from pruning to control seedling height at two forest tree nurseries. Host influence on inoculum production on shoots of red pine and jack pine incubated in vitro, artificially inoculated in vivo, and naturally infected with D. pinea and D. scrobiculata was studied.

520 $a Red pine cones were surveyed to determine incidence and abundance of D. pinea conidia on red pine cones of different ages during summer and winter of 3 consecutive years. Large numbers of conidia were obtained from cones even 3 years after they had matured. Frequency of detection and inoculum production by D. pinea and D. scrobiculata on red and jack pine cones were studied in six sites during 2 consecutive years. At least one pathogen was detected from each tree, at each site, in both years. Overall, more conidia (g-1 odw) were extracted from red pine cones than jack pine cones. Finally, variation in incidence and abundance of potential inoculum from cones and frequency of asymptomatic persistence on or in shoots was examined for 12 sites differing in dominant presettlement vegetation and soil type in Bayfield and Douglas counties in northern Wisconsin. Diplodia pinea was detected more frequently than D. scrobiculata. More D. pinea conidia were obtained from cones from Douglas Co. than from Bayfield Co. In Douglas Co., more conidia were obtained from plantations in areas of presettlement jack pine dominance than those in areas of presettlement red pine dominance. The frequencies detection of Diplodia spp. from cones and asymptomatic shoots were positively correlated.
