Using Glaser and Strauss' (1967) grounded theory methodology as a guide, a qualitative investigation was undertaken to explore the experiences of racism in older African American men, how they have coped with these experiences, and their perceptions of the impact of racism on their health. Using community organizations and snowball sampling methods, 10 older African American men, from a major metropolitan area, age 65 and older, were interviewed regarding their lifetime experiences of racism. The mean age of participants was 74.5 years (SD=5.6). Participants reported a mean annual income of
$5
9,700 (SD=
$2
0,651). Education level ranged from completing high school to receiving a doctoral degree. All participants had some military experience, and 8 out of 10 were employed in local, state, or federal government settings after their military service. Fifteen themes were extracted from the interviews which lasted from 45 to 120 minutes each. Nine of these themes were associated with the participants' experiences of racism, with four themes related to coping strategies and two associated with perceptions of the effects of racism on health. Grounded themes revealed overt experiences of racism in well-known areas including education, employment, and housing, and in the less well-known area of the military. Participants' narratives also revealed themes surrounding Black racism, particularly in a little known area of intragroup racism. The participants reported utilizing a wide array of coping strategies, consistent with the work of Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and others (Park, Folkman & Bostrom, 2001). The participants also highlighted the importance of religion and spirituality in the coping process. More than half of the participants believed that racism did not have an impact on their overall health. However, they concluded that racism does play a part in the negative health status of other African Americans, as a result of the level of importance or meaning given to particular racist encounters. Results are described in terms of the existing literature, and theoretical, clinical, and research implications are offered. It appears that perceptions of racism have implications for its impact on overall health and well-being.
