Claude Debussy's "Voiles" from Prelude for Piano, book I, 1910 was used as an example of whole-tone and pentatonic scales. Certain selected piano passages from Igor Stravinsky's ballet, Petrouchka, 1911 was selected for the two techniques, bitonality and the use of an octatonic scale. Vincent Persichetti's "Episode" from the Third Piano Sonata, 1945 was selected for the use of quartal harmony. Paul Hindemith's "Fuga nona in B," from Ludus Tonalis, 1942 was selected to study the twentieth-century linear counterpoint. The Second of Bela Bartok's Eight Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op. 20, 1920 was selected for the purpose of introducing the usage of modes, especially bimodal combinations. Ernst Krenek's Eight Piano Pieces, 1946 was chosen because of his straightforward use of twelve-tone technique.

Twentieth-century composers have created entirely new musical languages from seemingly limitless 'world-wide' sources. However, these very same composers, while moving forward in all areas of musical materials and perceptions, have in many cases held fast to traditional forms as a principle means of organization. Consequently, through an examination of the older forms and structures evident in modern compositions, the contemporary music teacher may find fresh insights for new lesson strategies, teacher/students discussions, and, ultimately, the development of a students' own ability to interpret and love the musical literature of the twentieth century.
