Adviser: Jillian Jimenez.
Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
The purpose of this project is to write a narrative describing the numerous obstacles my family and I overcame when leaving an impoverished life style in Mexico City. Different barriers made the already harsh transition into a new culture almost unbearable. Our tumultuous journey into the United States, where my family and I entered illegally began with being smuggled in by a man TO WHOM my father entrusted my brother and me. This same man later attempted to molest me and this negative experience impacted me tremendously throughout my youth. Upon arrival to the United States my family's struggle included language barriers, poverty, unemployment, discrimination, lack of food, and depression.

This was a hard journey for my family and me. We experienced endless hardships while trying to assimilate into a new society. This became an everyday battle because I was seeking a sense of belonging. Assimilation for my family and me was not an easy psychological process, and it directly and indirectly affected in the development of my adolescent depression. Fortunately, my mother's persistence helped me through a difficult stage and made it easier for me to overcome my adolescent depression. During this stage I truly experienced the purest form of love from my mother.
