Due to the biotrophic nature of mycorrhizal fungi, changes in the aboveground forest community assemblage will have a direct effect on the belowground community. This study examined the role of forest community composition and distribution on soil inoculum potential of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) and Tsuga canadensis seedling success. The first study used ex situ soil bioassays and in situ planted seedlings to compare seedling growth, survival and colonization in soils from hemlock and hardwood forests. EMF species assemblage was different between hemlock and hardwood communities, and seedlings planted in hemlock dominated forests grew significantly better. The second study used neighborhood models to examine the influence of community composition, distribution, and mycorrhizal type on hemlock seedling emergence, growth, biomass, and colonization. Mycorrhizal neighborhood models performed poorly compared to null and basic neighborhood models implying a poor correlation between above- and belowground species distribution.
