Recycling of organic wastes can be achieved through the use of earthworms in a process known as vermicomposting. The quality of vermicompost, which relates to its maturity, influences its utilization and marketability. This study determined the chemical composition and maturity of vermicomposts derived from different feedstocks, and their performance as plant growth media. The three combinations of feedstocks, kitchen wastes with paper (KPW), kitchen wastes with yard wastes (KYW), and cattle manure with yard wastes (CMY), were vermicomposted using Eisenia fetida in a discontinuous bin system at 20-27°C and 75--80% moisture for 45, 68 and 90 days. The vermicompost production and characterization were carried-out as a 3 x 4 factorial experiment in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The chemical properties determined were pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), CT:NT, CT:P T, Navail and Psol., and KT, Ca T, MgT, and CT. The chemical parameters were used to assess vermicompost maturity. Plant assay included germination tests using direct seed and vermicompost-water extract procedures on radish ( Raphanus sativus), marigold (Tagetes patula) and upland cress (Barbarea verna). The growth of these plants in 5% and 10% vermicompost-soil combinations and soil control were measured in terms of total dry biomass and leaf area. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
