Thesis (Ph.D.)--Vanderbilt University, 1984.
The primary aim of this study is to better define the taxonomically difficult section Umbellati of Cyperus (Cyperaceae) by bringing together various kinds of information which help to better understand the biology of and relationships among its species. Included in this study are discussions of species and sectional relationships, morphology, life history, ecology, and nomenclature.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The following nomenclatural changes are made. Cyperus retrofractus (L.) Torr. is applied correctly for the first time to a species which has been called since 1906 C. dipsaciformis Fern. A lectotype for Scirpus echinatus L. is selected from two discordant elements and C. echinatus (L.) Wood is conserved and replaces C. ovularis (Michx.) Torr. C. globulosus Aubl. is found to be among incorrectly applied and the next available name, C. croceus Vahl, is employed in its place. A neglected name C. ovatus Baldw. is shown to have priority over C. pollardi Britt. and is used for this often overlooked species. A new combination, C. ovatus Baldw. var. blodgettii (Britt.) Carter, is made.

Placement of the distinctive Caribbean species, C. picardae Boeckl., with other Umbellati is brought into question based on a number of striking gross and anatomical features. Evidence is presented to indicate the possible hybrid origin of C. retrofractus (L.) Torr.

All species were found to have krantz anatomy and most of those investigated were found to have CO(,2) Compensation Points within the range of the C-4 photosynthetic pathway. These results are discussed in light of recent treatments which are based on presence or absence of these characteristics.

The problem of intergradation and its bearing on species and sectional concepts is addressed, and the study concludes with a taxonomic treatment of the group. Field observations, greenhouse studies, and an examination of herbarium specimens are the basis for this treatment, which consists of a diagnostic key, descriptions, detailed illustrations, and distributional data.
