This cross-sectional study examined the association between familismo, resilience and the perception of problem-solving abilities among Latino family caregivers of dementia afflicted family members. A nonprobability snowball sample of 60 was recruited from Connecticut and Massachusetts through community agencies. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to examine participants' demographic characteristics, attitudinal familismo, resilience, and problem-solving abilities. Based upon the strength's perspective and cultural socialization theory the study posited family caregiver differences and associations.

Research findings confirm the hypotheses of association between familismo and resilience but not problem solving. Multiple comparisons of demographics indicate differences by educational level in familismo attitudes, by gender in familismo attitudes and resilience and differences in perception of problem solving by educational level and relationship to care recipient. While familismo does not minimize the risk factors for Latino family caregivers, it is likely to act as a buffer or impart an additional property that improves desirable outcomes.
