Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2008.
The following M.A. thesis will explore the theme of happiness and the return to childhood throughout 19th to 20th century literature. Analyzing works of fiction by French authors George Sand, Francois Rene de Chateaubriand, Bernardin de Saint Pierre, Gustave Flaubert, Marcel Proust and Emile Zola, the author will compare and contrast these works to fictional writers of the Americas like the French Canadian poet Emile Nelligan and Mexican poet Ramon Lopez Velarde. The author will examine the impact of the French romantic, realist, symbolist, naturalist and surrealist movements while exploring the work of the unconventional poet Emile Verhaeren.

The thesis discusses happiness and its relation to exile and the return to childhood by revealing that only the creation of a new society leads to lasting happiness. By examining the historical events during 19th century France, the author links the themes of the Romantic Movement in literature to the political evolution of France into a Republic. The characters in quest of returning to childhood and rediscovering happiness go against the current of their contemporaries and expose themselves to disillusionment from reality and their own memories.
