Tremblay, Petra A.
Representation, context and visitor response to the National Museum of the American Indian.
- 70 p.
Adviser: Albert Dekin.
Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2008.
In 2004, the newest Smithsonian Institute museum opened on The Mall in Washington, DC. It opened to great fanfare, and was largely panned by the popular press, which I argue was completely predictable given the history of Native American representations inside the United States. I will trace the history of American Indian representations in the United States, looking at who was using the image of Native America for what purposes, and how those representations, created the history and expectations which the National Museum of the American Indian found itself working against. In closing, I will argue that the museum is brilliant, but asked visitors to "read" the museum in a way that had 500 years worth of expectations regarding Native American representations working against it, and discuss what could have been done to stop this unsuccessful response without undermining the goals of the museum.
