A Ghost Ride: Bertha Mason's story.
Heist, Meredith.
A Ghost Ride: Bertha Mason's story.
- 91 p.
Adviser: Linda Seidel.
Thesis (M.A.)--Truman State University, 2008.
This narrative is a retelling of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre from the point-of-view of Bertha Mason. Written in first person stream-of-consciousness, it attempts to offer a new perspective on the story, different from Jean Rhys' re-interpretation, Wide Sargasso Sea. A thorough introduction provides the reader with insight to the reasoning behind authorial decisions and shares some critical supporting material about Bertha and her role as a symbol of repression, womanhood, and lack of voice. Bertha Antoinetta Mason marries Edward Rochester in Jamaica, 1817. What follows is a tumultuous marriage and a fight for her sanity. As Bertha gives into her madness, she is locked away by her husband to disappear from the world. However, she is not silenced easily. Repeatedly Bertha attempts to take revenge and free herself but fails until her suicide.
