This research study addressed the efficacy of art therapy in facilitating the treatment of individuals with substance dependence disorders. Participants at a substance abuse treatment center were administered the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES) to assess their dominant stage of change. Following this initial assessment, participants engaged in 4 weekly art therapy sessions. During these sessions verbal and non-verbal responses of the participants were recorded. Following the 4-week art intervention phase, the SOCRATES was re-administered. The scores on the SOCRATES were analyzed using a t test. This test showed a significant increase in the scores from the pretest SOCRATES to the posttest SOCRATES. The qualitative data demonstrated participants' increased comfort with the art therapy process and corresponding expression of feelings. The results of the study were encouraging for the use of art therapy with individuals that have substance dependence disorders.
