Thesis (M.S.)--Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University, 2008.
For over 40 million residents of the United States, the inability to speak the same language as their health professionals carries the potential of compromising their access to and quality of care. Although interpretation and translation services assist greatly in the communication process, use of written patient material adds tremendous value to patient/health professional interactions, particularly in the complex discipline of medical genetics. To this date, there is no comprehensive compilation of genetic counseling focused materials for patients whose native language is not English. The purpose of this study is to assess the extent to which professional genetic counselors would utilize and trust a repository of multi-lingual genetic counseling information. We identified that an overwhelming 99.7% of counselors would find a centralized repository to be useful. It is essential to implement this service as soon as possible to address the outstanding professional need, and to improve healthcare language access.
