Psychological correlates for the approval of animal fighting.
- 76 p.
Adviser: Donald Templer.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Alliant International University, Fresno, 2009.
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of approval/disapproval of animal fighting as a function of attitudes toward animals, empathy for other humans, sex, masculinity, and animal fighting. This is important not only for the prevention of animal cruelty but because of the link between animal fighting and violence toward humans. Increasing knowledge regarding characteristics of those who condone animal fighting will lead to a better understanding of aggressiveness and violence toward animals and people. Cockfighting was selected because it is one of the most common "sports" in the world, especially in Latin America and Asia. Dogfighting was selected because, even though illegal, it frequently occurs in the United States.

The study examined two dependent variables -- attitudes toward cockfighting (male chickens) and attitudes toward dogfighting -- in relation to five independent variables: (a) masculinity, as measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1973); (b) empathy toward humans, as measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis, 1980); (c) perception of animals as a separate species, as measured by the Animal-Human Continuity Scale (Templer, Connelly, Bassman, & Hart, 2006); (d) attitudes toward pets, as measured by the Pet Attitude Scale (Templer, Salter, Dickey, Baldwin, & Veleber, 1981); and (e) sex, as measured by the demographic questionnaire. Participants were 206 students at a community college. Correlations between the dependent and independent variables, as well as implications and suggestions for further research, are discussed.
