The following research has been designed to investigate the phenomenon of creativity as lived-experience and its impact on awareness. The aim was to explore the shift in awareness associated with the creative process and its potential to evoke personal transformation. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to execute this study. Research participants consisted of visual artists, writers, and musicians. Three individuals in each domain were selected, resulting in a total of nine participants. The data collection process consisted of in-depth interviews with each participant guided by a series of open-ended questions.

Findings reveal the cognitive and emotional dimensions of the creative process to include: conflict; internal turmoil; an attempt to defy constraints; intense overwhelming emotion; a felt need for release; and seeking a new order. The shifts in awareness associated with the creative process were found to include: exploring the dark side of oneself; the sense of a build up of pressure; surrender; relinquishing control; a flow-state; a meditative quality of awareness; and channeling a life force beyond the self. Results depict transformation through the creative process to involve the following experiences: bridging internal and external realities; transcending the ego; embracing the unknown; catharsis; allowing overwhelming emotion to move through the self; integration of seemingly opposing forces; communion; destruction and recreation; and breaking patterns of repetition.

Implications for clinical psychology suggest that a quality of resilience; the capacity to confront conflict and move through difficulties; the experience of integration; and the formation of a more cohesive sense of self may be fostered through the creative process. Suggestions for future research include: further exploration of resilience and psychic integration in relation to the creative process; the deconstruction of one's current paradigm as a force underlying the creative impulse; as well as the transformative potential of creativity with respect to collective consciousness.
