Capitalist philanthropy evolved in early twentieth-century America as a symbiosis of capitalist secularism and Judeo-Christian religious heritage, in a recently invented country with vast natural and human resources leavened with a European heritage, mass immigration, a laissez-faire industrial market economy, and both physical and social mobility.

American philanthropy is characterized by its community emphasis, flexibility of means and method, and partnership of donor and recipient, but most particularly by the fact that the source of resources shifted from church to business. Business leadership favored a "scientific" model of bureaucratic management, financial accountability, and the support of institutions such as schools, hospitals and libraries rather than individual almsgiving, to further social progress and to strengthen the market economy.
