Social reproduction is a theme that is popularly used to frame the analysis of private schooling in Canada. Scholarly research taking private schooling as its subject has generally supported the position that private schools perpetuate the advantage of the upper class and therefore contribute to the maintenance of the existing class structure. While such research has at times noted private school efforts to pursue education for social responsibility, these efforts are often interpreted within a "social reproduction" paradigm. Little work has been done to study private school education for social responsibility for its own sake, or to examine first-hand the effect that this education has on private school students. This analysis seeks to explore programs associated with education for social responsibility at Upper Canada College. Social responsibility programs, their genesis, and their effect on the student body are tracked over the course of the school's 175 year history.
