The World Bank has evolved its policy recommendations for poverty elimination over the past fifty years. These policies are directly influenced by the definition of poverty that is in use, which in turn is influenced by the dominant economic theories of the time. As this dissertation shows, the definition used by the World Bank has been constrained by the traditional economic conception of poverty, and a fuller understanding of the conditions existing in developing countries can be created when other disciplines are introduced. This will allow more effective poverty-reduction policies to be created.

520 $a This dissertation discusses World Bank policies and their implications for poverty within the developing world and the economic theories that underlie these policies. It begins with an overview of the history of the World Bank and its policies over time, including their success or lack of success as measured by the World Bank itself. For ease of discussion, the history is divided into three conceptual periods based on the major doctrines of the time. After this discussion, the dissertation takes a brief look at the philosophical foundations of these policies, and concludes with possible reasons for policy failures. This dissertation will be a starting point for discussions regarding the most effective ways of eliminating true poverty around the world.
