Thesis (Psy.D.)--St. John's University (New York), 2005.
Prompted by erroneous cognitive processing of aversive triggers, problematic anger reactions characteristically generate physiological arousal with subsequent displays of maladaptive behavioral responses. Therapeutic interventions applied in anger management traditionally include role-plays of anger-engendering scenarios and replications of anger inducing events through the use of imagery techniques. Effective applications of such methods attempt to simulate immersion in anger inducing situations. Given that Virtual Reality applications are designed to simulate naturalistic environments, it is hypothesized that when immersed into a 3-D virtual world, individuals who are low on anger and hypnotizability scales will experience associated physiological arousal more intensely than when prompted via imagery.
