Two lesser themes (i.e., discussed by two to six women) also emerged: impact on men and future generations. Here the women shared how their African American partners have been impacted and what their hopes and desires are for future generations.

The present qualitative study focused on the experiences of nine Filipina Americans who have had African American partners and, as a result, experienced negativity from family members. The women ranged in age from 25 to 43. Six were currently in an interracial relationship with an African American partner, with four married, one engaged, and one dating. Data was gathered through one-on-one interviews and researcher field notes. Transcripts were analyzed for units of meaning and themes.

Through this process, four greater themes were revealed: family norms, significant relationships, oppression, and current levels of awareness. Discussions around family norms included values, beliefs, and ethics; ethnocentric social interactions both within and by the family unit; and multiple ways of avoiding interpersonal conflict. With regard to significant relationships, the women talked about maintaining harmony between various individuals, having relationships with diverse individuals, and their love relationship with an African American partner. The major theme of oppression included perspectives on skin color; prejudice, stereotypes, and racism; and internalized oppression. Oppression was discussed on multiple levels: within the women, their families, and the Filipino American community. As the women shared about their current levels of awareness and understanding, they reflected on where they see other cultures, themselves, and their families.

The themes provide understanding and insight to these women's experiences related to their interracial relationships. It was clear how the sociohistorical contexts along with the women's life experiences impacted how they currently see themselves, their families, the Filipino American community, and the world overall. The women have been shaped by the multiple themes that emerged, which are simultaneously impacted by and are impacting one another.

The women's experiences, insights, and circumstances cannot be generalized to all Filipino Americans and/or individuals in interracial relationships since intragroup diversity exists. Recommendations for future research and ways the findings can positively impact the Filipino American community are provided.
