This exploratory study, using the constructivist grounded theory research methodology, examined the issue of a community of faith among online learners from two perspectives: (a) What communication tools found within or outside of the standard CMS toolset function most effectively in the establishment and maintenance of a community of faith among online learners at Christian colleges and universities; and (b) What are the course design considerations that need to be implemented in order to establish a community of faith among online learners at Christian colleges and universities?

Rich text data was collected, coded, and analyzed, in order to produce a cohesive theory pertaining to the establishment and fostering of a community of faith for online learners at Christian colleges and universities. The constructivist grounded theory that emerged from the data analysis can be summarized as follows: (a) Coursework must be designed with the intention of introducing, establishing, and maintaining a community of faith. The development of a community of faith among online course participants primarily occurs in the discussion boards devoted to the dissemination of course content; (b) In addition to the use of threaded discussions, institutions may also choose to employ additional means of communicating or disseminating content designed to stimulate discussion that will build the community of faith. Instant messaging tools, such as text-based chat programs, voice-over-IP programs, or even videoconferencing programs can be effective at building the community of faith, provided that they are implemented in a fashion that meets the needs of the learners and that they are not out of the reach of the learners; (c) The online faculty member must make time available throughout the course for the development of community, beginning with an autobiographical discussion thread, and continuing as appropriate in the formal and informal communications of the group. For the instructor to be truly effective in this venture, coordinated professional development is necessary on the part of the institution.
