Confronting clinical difference: Tolerating tension between Freud and Klein on the transference.
- 94 p.
Chair: Denise Scatena.
Thesis (Psy.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2003.
This dissertation offers a view of how to work with clinicians' clinical differences in the psychoanalytic discipline. I develop Freud's and Klein's interpretations of the transference and apply these perspectives to a case example. I juxtapose these two divergent views in order to extricate areas of tension that arise from the differences in clinical perspective. I use this example of a confrontation with clinical difference to develop a model of how the psychoanalytic therapist can both assert a particular clinical perspective while acknowledging and holding alternative ways of thinking about clinical work---namely, by developing a capacity to tolerate tension. I argue that tolerating tension in the confrontation with clinical difference is a useful way of working with divergent clinical perspectives because it maintains relatedness between and among the views. I articulate the complexity of mind required in the development of one's capacity to tolerate such tension, and consider implications of the breakdown in tension between clinical perspectives. This dissertation contributes a possibility for opening doors and bridging gaps between diverging schools of thought.
