Thesis (M.S.)--The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, 2008.
Purpose. to assess age, sex and regional variation in the cortical bone thickness of commonly used of mini-screw implant placement sites in the maxilla and mandible. Methods. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, taken at 0.39mm voxel size of 56 patients, including 26 adolescents (13 females ages 11-13; 13 males ages 14-16) and 26 adults (13 males and females between the ages of 20 to 45), were used. The cortical bone thickness was measured at 16 sites in the maxilla and mandible. Results. MANOVA showed no significant differences in cortical bone thickness between males and females. There were significant (p<0.001) differences between adolescents and adults, with adult cortices being significantly thicker. There were also significant differences in cortical thickness between regions and sites within each region. Conclusions. Cortical bone thickness of commonly used of mini-screw implant placement sites in the maxilla and mandible increases with age. There is no sex difference in cortical bone thickness in these sites. Differences in cortical bone thickness exist between regions and within each region.
