At the foundation of public health research is the desire to establish cause-effect relationships. In many areas of research, we lack the ability to perform randomized controlled trials due to ethical and/or practical concerns. Therefore, we must rely on observational studies to extract information on causal effects. This thesis consists of three case-studies outlining methods for estimating causal targets in public health research. Each case-study is the result of a consulting experience that I have had during my tenure in the Department of Biostatistics Consulting Center. As with most consulting, the substantive areas of research are very different. However, the primary focus of each study is identifying the causal target, identifying observable data that provides information on the causal target and establishing models that utilize and synthesize the observed data in a manner determined by modeling assumptions that reflect the knowledge of the substantive area.
