520 $a The data for this study have been collected using a questionnaire distributed to Grade 9's and 12's at both a rural and urban based high school within Frontenac County, Ontario. It is the purpose of this study to determine if counselling service differences exist between urban and rural adolescents, males and females, amongst Grade 9 and 12 students, and depending on the primary information sources indicated by the respondents.
520 $a The findings of a series of Chi-square procedures suggest that there are significant associations between geographical location, grade, sex and choice of sexual issues and drug and alcohol information sources. It was found that rural youth face more serious mobility and anonymity problems in attempting to obtain information dealing with drug and alcohol use, and sexual issues, than urban adolescents. Female respondents unlike the male participants, tended to be more concerned about maintaining their confidentiality, and indicated a greater reliance on others for transit to counselling and information services. In addition, the mobility of Grade 12 students was found to be significantly greater than Grade 9 students.
520 $a This study represents one of the first efforts to examine adolescents as a distinct group within human geography. These findings contribute to the initiation of service location studies for adolescents, and a recognition of the needs and constraints they experience while attempting to access counselling services.
