Thesis (M.A.)--Wayne State University, 2008.
A linguistic version of the change-detection paradigm was used to examine good enough representation. Participants read sentence pairs where a subject noun (e.g., flower) could change in the second sentence to a superordinate noun (e.g., plant), a subordinate noun (e.g. rose), an unrelated noun (e.g., prince ), or remain the same (direct translation in the bilingual task). This was completed in English for monolinguals and cross-linguistically for bilinguals, where the first sentence appeared in English (L1) and the second in French (L2). The linguistic focus of the sentence was also manipulated.

It was expected that focused changes would be detected more, as would changes to unrelated words, both of which were confirmed with both samples. Also, proficiency was found to have a positive relationship with accuracy, whereby more proficient participants were more accurate. Subordinate-level changes were the least accurately detected (because of their inclusion in the basic-level term), which was clearly the case with the bilingual data. These results are in line with a similar study conducted by Sturt, Sanford, Stewart and Dawydiak (2004) and support Ferreira, Bailey and Ferraro's (2002) notion of Good Enough Representation and Hobbs' (1985) granularity account.
