Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2008.
The History of the Peloponnesian War, written by the Greek historian Thucydides, contains an analysis of political behavior that is deeply relevant to the citizen of the early twenty-first century. Unfortunately, the history is often misused and applied to contemporary situations in a very superficial way. Events that occurred during the war between Athens and Sparta during the later 5th century B.C.E. are treated as parallels to events in contemporary times as though they can be authoritatively instructive of foreign policy without any further analysis. In this thesis, I argue that the true value of Thucydides' history lies in its capacity to teach the reader about the nature of political behavior in the real world and the forces that affect political decision making in democracies, whether ancient or modern.
