This paper looks at the emergence of four contemporary "downtown" choreographers, Tere O'Connor, Jennifer Monson, John Jasperse and Donna Uchizono, working in New York City beginning in the late 1980's, and examines their work in context of their time, influences and artistic goals and the process of achieving those goals creatively and administratively.

Downtown choreographers were defined, on one hand, by an attitude and aesthetic and on the other, by the primary venues that supported their work.
