This action research project examined student perceptions of gaining better social skills in the workforce after taking a Work-Based Learning class. The study took place during the fall and spring of the 2006--2007 school year, in a group-home school for teenage girls ages 12-18 years old. Ten students participated in the study. Instrumentation included a student presurvey, and post survey of 18 identified job-related social skills. In addition to the surveys, several role-play and videotaped focus group discussions took place. Analysis of the data was based on descriptive statistics of the survey data and the qualitative data collected from the focus group. The findings of the study revealed an increase in social skills for the at-risk youth. Results of this study will provide information for educators interested in increasing the social skills necessary for "at risk" girls to be able to compete for jobs once they graduate from the group-home setting.
